GREAT ZIMBABWE

Opinions on the origin of the massive stone structures at Great Zimbabwe differ. During the thirteenth century this great city of stone arose in the African interior, thriving and growing for more than three hundred years as the capital of a vast gold and ivory trading centre. By the end of the fifteenth century the city lay abandoned. The stone city of Great Zimbabwe is today recognised as being the largest ancient structure in sub-Saharan Africa. The city was built to be impressive, an achievement that has not diminished in five centuries.

The Lodge at the Ancient City was built not only in harmony with its immediate surroundings, but also to capture and reflect the essence of Great Zimbabwe itself. Accommodation consists of twenty thatched en suite cottages, hand ochred in traditional style, while the interiors feature raised stone platforms. Historical guides take guests on detailed walks through Great Zimbabwe, as well as to neighbouring tribal areas and to the nearby Lake Mutirikwe.
